A 150 year old traditional cottage on the West coast of Ireland which had been destroyed in a fire and fallen derelict, was fully refurbished with thatch roof reinstated. A new extension constructed to the rear of the cottage seeks to integrate with the surrounding landscape , utilising stone from the site and reflecting the materiality of local agricultural buildings. The extension is built into the slope of the surrounding ground, and from the road approach and the front of the cottage appears as an innocuous shed. Windows and openings aim to bring as much of the outside into the interior spaces, and the kitchen has light and views in three directions.
